Chelsea Greenwood, Owner and Head Coach

Certifications: CFL1, CFL2, CrossFit and i99 Gymnastics, and CrossFit Weightlifting with Mike Bergner

Coach Chelsea is a Hampton native and the mother of 3 kids, including a set of twins. She found her love for functional fitness in 2014 after losing her dad to a brief battle with cancer. CrossFit helped her regain her self-confidence after multiple pregnancies and burn off the every day stresses of life. She quickly realized how sharing her experiences through CrossFit could benefit so many others. In 2015, she became a coach. Since then she has continued her education through CrossFit and nutrition. “My passion is helping people improve their quality of life.” After years of coaching she developed a specific vision for helping others, but it could not be best obtained by working for someone else. That is when she actively pursued opening her own affiliate. As Greg Glassman (the founder of CrossFit) said, it’s about “doing the right things for the right people, for the right reasons.” Chelsea decided to build her business in Buckroe Beach because of its location and uniqueness. CrossFit Buckroe Beach was founded in February 2019. Chelsea aspires to offer a gym unlike any other in the area. “It’s a smaller CrossFit Box focused on going back to the basics – where CrossFit started. We all know each other by name and our children grow and play together while we grow together as a health conscience community.”

Coach Andrew Smith

Andrew Smith, Head Coach

Certifications: CFL1, CFL2

Andrew "Coach Tiny" moved to the Hampton Roads area in 2014 from Minnesota. Tiny is a disabled Marine veteran who found his love for CrossFit in 2015 when he needed help working through a back injury. CrossFit helped Andrew rehabilitate his injuries and regain strength. CrossFit improved his health so much that he wanted to share his experiences and strengthen others by becoming a CrossFit Coach in January 2019. He competed in multiple local CrossFit competitions but his true passion behind CrossFit is teaching others proper technique, form, and scaling to keep athletes safe both inside and outside of CrossFit Buckroe Beach. When Tiny is not at Crossfit Buckroe Beach he can be found at the beach, a local brewery, or a dog park with his dog Zoe.

Ashley Charron, Assistant Head Coach

Certifications: CFL1, CFL2

Ashley Charron was born at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She played Division I softball and obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Management at Delaware State University. In 2013, Ashley married her wife and fell in love with CrossFit. As a military spouse, Ashley has been able to take her CrossFit journey through Delaware, Utah and now Virginia. She also works from home for an ophthalmologist office in Delaware and takes care of their beautiful daughter. She loves spending time with her family, being near the water, the San Francisco Giants and their small zoo (Riley, Edison, Atticus and Posey). 

“I have always loved CrossFit and I want to share that passion with others. My favorite part about being a coach is teaching an athlete a new movement— the joy is priceless.”

P.J. Affinito, Coach

Certifications: CFL1, CFL2 and i99Fit

P.J. was born and raised in New Jersey. He relocated to southern Virginia in 2014. P.J. is a fitness enthusiast and has been competing in sports and fitness events since he was in grammar school. He has competed in powerlifting, bodybuilding, and CrossFit competitions as well as obstacle races. Most recently he ran his first ultra marathon. He has been a certified Personal Trainer since age 18 and he studied Nutrition Science as a second major in college. P.J. started CrossFit in 2013. It was a much needed change from his normal gym routine and he was immediately hooked. P.J.’s passion for helping people live a healthier lifestyle, paired with great coaching at CrossFit Buckroe Beach, inspired him to become a coach himself. His goals are to continue learning of the fundamentals of CrossFit under Chelsea’s guidance and to become a more well rounded athlete and coach. He is very excited to be a part of the CrossFit Buckroe Beach community.

Daniel Greenwood

Daniel Greenwood, Coach

Certifications: CFL1

Daniel Greenwood is proud Dad of four rowdy kids Brayden, Dominic, Dalia, and Danie Greenwood. He has lived in Hampton his entire life. He is a 3rd generation electrician and a master of all the trades. Daniel got into CrossFit in 2014 after he and his wife Chelsea Greenwood decided to make their health a priority for the better benefit of their family. Since starting his CrossFit Journey Daniel has been able to overcome many underlying health conditions such as hypertension and diabetes and drastically change his body composition. His primary focus at CrossFit Buckroe Beach is improving the facility for it's members.

Adam Swansen, Coach

Certifications: CFL1

Adam is passionate about fitness after spending some time in the restaurant business and struggling with his weight. He got into running and really fell in love with health and fitness. So much so that he made it his career and currently travels around the country and puts on running events. Adam was introduced to Crossfit and instantly fell in love with it. The challenge of always having something to work on and challenge you was alluring and kept him coming back. He knew he wanted to share that with the world in some fashion! He firmly believes that it’s all about the long game and that we’re in this to be healthy and kick ass into our 90s! Adam strives to always be learning and helping others through the knowledge that he gains. Adam lives in Virginia Beach with his wife Brandi and their two dogs Jack and Heidy. Adam also believes that every day has the potential to be great, but first he needs his coffee.

Jessica Gambone, Coach & Kids Coordinator

Certifications: CF-L1, CrossFit Kids

Jess moved to the Hampton Roads area in 2018 and now happily calls it home. She grew up playing sports throughout childhood and even during some of college. Sports kept her pretty active, creating a natural love of fitness. After having her first child, she picked up long distance running where she participated in various races to include 5Ks, 10Ks, half and full marathons.  All while…pushing a stroller in most of them!  Once introduced to Crossfit though, she fell in love with the program and philosophy. Jess is a mom of two kids and is part of the Virginia Air National Guard. In their free time they can be seen playing on the beach, performing workouts together and finding the best ice cream shoppes.

“I love Crossfit and the community it brings together. I want to share all of what it has done for me to others. I also want to be a great example for my kids. To teach them healthy habits, to have good sportsmanship, and to never give up.”

Tyler Massimini, Coach

Certifications: CFL1 and CFL2

Tyler moved to the Hampton Roads area in November of 2019. After growing up as a competitive swimmer, he found the sport of CrossFit in college at Louisiana State University. He fell in love and avidly competed and trained with Matt Bruce and his team of athletes and coaches in Baton Rouge. In 2020, he decided to obtain his Level 1 coaching certificate and began to coach and spread his knowledge gained through his many years of being a competitive athlete. He truly believes that the CrossFit methodology, both in and out of the gym, is the best way to fight against disease and obesity, and wants to challenge every person that walks into the gym! Tyler is currently enrolled in a Naval commissioning program and obtaining his degree in Mechanical Engineering at ODU. When he is not at the gym, he can be found hanging out with his dogs and wife in Hampton.

Elena Hawley, Yoga Instructor

Certifications: RYT-500hr (Registered with Yoga Alliance), RPYT (prenatal yoga) and RCYT (children’s yoga), certified breath coach

Elena began practicing yoga more than 10 years ago in Russia and fell in love with it. Elena tried different styles back then, and her favorite was Vinyasa yoga style. It appealed to her because it’s sequences and meditative rhythm let her feel so strong and flexible and yet present in the moment at the same time. She believes that practicing yoga helps to improve well-being and enable one to become more content and happy. 

 

Elena came to the Yoga Teachers training because of her desire to help people. Her background includes working as a psychologist and a teacher. This was always her passion - to help people grow and develop. The same in yoga: Elena sees the role of a teacher as a helper and supporter in a person’s path to a better Self, where the first step is deeper knowledge of who you really are. 

 

What inspires her in everyday life: spending time with family, friends and pets, seeing the beauty of nature, meditating in the sunset, having conversations with her loved ones, teaching and learning.
